The City of Sydney is the first council in Australia to achieve formal certification as carbon-neutral as a result of its benchmark greenhouse gas reduction programs. The City of Sydney asked residents and businesses what they wanted to see happen over the next 20 years and beyond. The result is a collective plan for Sydney's sustainable development, called Sustainable Sydney 2030, creating a green, global and connected city. As part of this plan, the City of Sydney has set the most ambitious greenhouse gas reduction target of any Australian government - 70 per cent by 2030 (on 2006 levels). To reach these targets the City of Sydney is working to turn Sydney into a low-carbon city by 2030. This will be achieved in part by energy, water and waste strategies called green infrastructure. All these strategies aim to be implemented at once, as a network of complementary systems resulting in an innovative world first. For the property sector, the City of Sydney has a number of sustainability programs to meet these targets: CitySwitch Green Office is a national tenant energy efficiency program run in partnership with local councils. The program works with office tenants committed to improving their energy efficiency to make a positive impact on climate change. Better Buildings Partnership is a collaboration of a number of Sydney's leading public, private and institutional landlords. The partnership aims to improve the sustainability performance of existing commercial and public sector buildings across Sydney, representing nearly 60% of the office floor space across the city centre.
