Mick Serena works as the Deputy Principal and General Manager Construction at the University of Melbourne. The Construction Department delivers works for the University including the recently completed Economics and Commerce Faculty Building at 198 Berkeley Street. This iconic building is one of the first to have achieved a five star green star rating under the Educational Pilot Rating Tool and incorporates innovative spaces for teaching and learning. Other projects include the Neurosciences Facilities Project consisting of two state of the art buildings one located at Parkville and the other at the Austin Hospital.

Before taking up the appointment at the University of Melbourne in 2007, Mick was the Director of Capital Works and Facilities at the University of Western Sydney a position he held since 2000. The University of Western Sydney is a large metropolitan university consisting of six campuses at Bankstown, Blacktown, Campbelltown, Hawkesbury, Parramatta and Penrith with a total land area of 1,836 hectares and 555 buildings. In this role, he was responsible for managing the Capital Works and Facilities group providing a range of services to 37,000 students and over 2,500 staff at the University.

Before joining the University of Western Sydney, Mick worked in a number of roles as an Airfield Engineering Officer with the Royal Australian Air Force. Mick completed a Master of Design Science (Facilities Management) in 1999 and graduated with honours from Sydney University in 2000 appearing on the Deans Honours list for two consecutive years and winning the Haden Prize for outstanding proficiency in Facilities Management.

Green Cities 09 is Australia's premier conference for sustainability in the built environment. A joint initiative of the Green Building Council of Australia and the Property Council of Australia, the theme for Green Cities 09 is "Valuable, Affordable, Sustainable".

Green building innovators will gather in Brisbane from 1-3 March, 2009 to launch new products and technologies, and explore new ideas in sustainable building.
